Binoculars
You don’t really have to be a diehard nature lover in a forest ranger outfit to go outside with binoculars. Just imagine... Birdwatching from the observation hut in your favourite nature reserve. Catching sight of The Big Five on an impressive safari. Tracing constellations in a clear sky. Peering over the water in search of jumping fish. Single or double binoculars make the experience even more amazing. Which one you need further depends entirely on what you’ll be using it for. Keep your eyes open!
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Binoculars
Did you know that in addition to ordinary binoculars with two eyepieces, there are also models with one eyepiece called a monocular? Or what about binoculars that are exceptionally compact and lightweight, without losing focus? We’ve listed the main types for you.
- Monocular: limited weight and nice and compact, but less depth of image and limited magnification.
- Roof prism binoculars: compact and lightweight, with prisms located one behind the other. The light comes through the viewer in a straight line.
- Porro prism binoculars: slightly wider and heavier, with prisms lying side by side. The light comes in at an angle. Offers more depth than roof prism binoculars.
- Spotting scope: between binoculars and telescopes and thus more suitable for longer distances thanks to the extra magnification. You do need a tripod for this.
Will you use your binoculars mainly to spot birds like the yellowhammer, golden oriole, and hawfinches? Maybe even a kingfisher with some luck? Then stability is especially important. Binoculars with 8-10 magnification and a 20-40 mm objective lens always provide a stable and clear image. In addition, make sure you have a low close-up focus, so that you can also focus on birds that are closer to you.
Also important for (novice) bird watchers:
- Take your time: birds don’t stick to a schedule. If you don’t succeed today, just try again the next day or week.
- Start in your garden: you really don’t have to travel far to see exceptional birds. Hang up a tasty suet ball or a bag of peanuts to make them feel welcome.
- Focus: not only with your binoculars, but especially on one bird at a time. Immerse yourself in a species and build your knowledge as you go along.
