Different types at a glance
Cooler bag, cool box, backpack cooler: which one do you take with you when you travel? To make the choice a little easier, we’re happy to explain them below.
- Cooler bag: a (shoulder) bag with an insulating foam layer and an aluminium finish. Small, lightweight, and easily portable. Works with freezer packs.
- Cool box: a hard plastic box with foam insulation. Available in very large sizes, usually has a handle. Works with freezer packs or electricity.
- Backpack cooler: a cooler bag that you can simply wear as a backpack. All the benefits of a lightweight, compact cooler bag, right on your back!
Which cooler should I buy for the beach, in the car, or in the tent?
When buying a cooler, consider the activity and where you want to keep your food and drinks cool.
- On the beach:
For home use and on the beach, you can get a cooler that works with cooling elements. For a day out, choose an easy-to-carry format that also fits in the car. Choose a lager capacity of your cooler for garden parties!
- In the car:
If you want to keep your provisions cool in the car on the way to your destination, check whether your cooler fits behind one of the passenger seats or in the boot. If you’ve got a model that can be connected with a 12 V plug, you don’t need to bring along cooling elements.
- At the campsite:
If you’re going camping, a cooler with an inverter or a 220 V plug comes in handy. There are also examples that work with gas canisters. Also consider the size carefully: a family of six will need a larger cooler than just two people going camping. Also pay attention to the cooling capacity, the power consumption, and the noise level emitted by the cooler.
FAQ – Frequently asked questions about coolers
You can lower the temperature in your cool box or cooler bag by putting ice or cooling elements in it. With active coolers, the temperature is cooled using electricity.
- As contradictory as it may sound, put your drinks and food in first and then the cooling elements! Cold air sinks. So if you put the cooling elements on top, everything stays cool longer.
- Instead of ice packs, take a water bottle filled with ice, which you can then drink from later in the day.
- Use plastic containers to keep everything organised.
Clean your cool bag before and after use with a clean, damp cloth and leave to dry. Always store the bag with the zip or flap open in a dust-free place.
Clean your cool box before and after use with some lukewarm water and a drop of washing-up liquid and allow to dry thoroughly. Store it with the lid open or clamp a dry dishcloth between them. Unpleasant odours can be removed by soaking a mixture of water and baking soda inside your cool box for a few hours. Afterwards, wash out well with clean water.
