Meet Pieter, first-line support analyst

“We work in an industry that is constantly changing. You have to be able to respond to that.”

Who is Pieter?

•    Age : 29 years

•    Position : first-line support analyst for A.S.Adventure and Juttu since 2019

•    Job experience : support analyst for a construction company

•    Hobbies : playing tennis, trying out new recipes

“It immediately felt right during my job interviews. There was a good vibe in the office.”

“This December, I’ll be celebrating four years at Yonderland, Europe’s largest outdoor retailer, of which A.S.Adventure is part. I was a little anxious about starting somewhere completely new, but I immediately clicked with my colleagues. After my first day of work, end-of-year parties soon followed and I was able to really get to know the group well.”

A good first impression

“I had just finished my second year of psychology when I started working as a job student in the company where my father worked. I found that support suited me much more than my studies. That’s how I got into IT, without having studied for it. After several years working in the construction company where I’d worked my summer job, I got a call from a headhunter. They asked if I wanted to come and do support at Yonderland and work for A.S.Adventure. Meetings with HR and with my future supervisor then followed. It immediately felt right. There was a good vibe.”

“That first impression was soon confirmed. Everyone is easily approachable, from managers to colleagues. We take a direct approach here. We also do fun things together after our working hours, such as going for a drink, having a board game night, or renting a padel court. There is a relaxed atmosphere. Our fun committee also contributes to this, having already organised the occasional kubb tournament or afternoon pizza party, and recently they went all out with a summer event.”

A day in the life of a support analyst

“Every morning starts with the queries received via email and the ticketing system. We distribute the questions and find solutions for our colleagues. That also involves a lot of communication, both with the person who asked the question and with our own team or others in the company. For example, if it’s a problem in the software, then everyone should know about it. During the course of the day, we also receive phone calls in addition to emails and tickets, or colleagues come to our island seeking help.”

“Our team provides first-line support for A.S.Adventure and Juttu, so we solve problems that arrive at the stores, head office, and warehouse. If it’s IT-related, it comes our way. And we don't just sit at our desks. We regularly go to the warehouse or to one of the stores to solve something. We can also work from home for two days every week. That variation between spending time at the office, being on the road, and working from home is nice.”

“The fact that my first position here was one with growth opportunities appealed to me. I like being given this trust from early on.”

Growing within support

“The first-line support team usually has four members, but we’re temporarily working with six right now. Due to some shifts to new positions, we are hiring new people. I myself will soon grow into a second-line support analyst. That means I can dig even deeper into our systems to help colleagues. I’m very excited to get started. Because our teams sit close together at the headquarters in Hoboken, I already know the colleagues well. I don’t have to say goodbye to my current team either, as we are still working in the same space.”

“I had indicated that I felt ready to try something new. At the same time, the second-line team was looking for an extra colleague, so things moved quickly. In any case, it’s best to first look for a candidate internally to fill the position. The fact that my first position here was one with growth opportunities appealed to me when I started working here in 2019. I like being given this trust from early on.”

Get involved

“I notice that flexibility is an important trait among colleagues. We work in an industry that is constantly changing. You have to be able to respond to that. If something changes and doesn’t go according to plan, you need to be able to deal with that. Fortunately, the fun working atmosphere does help to shift quickly.”

“If I can give one more tip to new colleagues, it’s to get involved in the after-work activities. You get to know the colleagues better, you really click, and then working together goes even more smoothly. When I talk to my friends about work, I really notice how much effort a company like A.S.Adventure makes to offer everyone the most enjoyable, healthiest life possible. By organising outdoor activities, for example. That’s what makes coming to work so enjoyable.”
