A good backpack makes life on the move much easier. Whether you’re heading into the mountains for a multi-day trek, going for a day hike, cycling to school or work, or travelling the world, the right backpack is your best companion.

From a compact 15-litre hiking backpack to a spacious trekking backpack with a capacity of 60 litres or more: there’s a backpack for every activity, volume and body shape. Choose one with extra pockets, a laptop compartment or attachment points for walking poles, or a simple design without any unnecessary details. Wherever you’re going, what matters most is that your backpack suits your plans and fits comfortably on your back.

Which backpacks will you find in our range?

Not every backpack is made for the same purpose. A compact daypack is ideal for a walk, city break or day trip, while a multi-day trek requires much more luggage and therefore more carrying capacity. There are also backpacks designed specifically for school and work. A school backpack has room for your everyday essentials, while a laptop backpack keeps your computer and other work essentials organised. Travelling by bike? Then a cycling backpack with a comfortable, breathable back panel is a logical choice. And if you’re heading for the snow, you can rely on a ski backpack with dedicated attachment points for winter gear.

How do you choose the right backpack?

The best backpack isn’t necessarily the biggest or the one with the most compartments. The main thing is that the model suits your needs. What are you taking with you? How long will you be away? And how much carrying comfort do you need?

These four questions will help you narrow down your choice:

  1. What will you use the backpack for? Start with your activity. A short hike or day trip has different needs compared with a backpacking holiday or multi-day trek. An everyday backpack should be compact and practical, while a trekking backpack should offer plenty of space and carrying comfort.
  2. How many litres do you need? Backpack capacity is measured in litres. A 15 to 30-litre backpack is suitable if you don’t need to carry much. For longer trips or holidays, 30 to 55 litres may be more practical. For multi-day treks when you’ll also be carrying camping gear and extra clothing, for example, you’ll need a backpack with a capacity of 55 litres or more.
Of course, greater capacity doesn’t automatically mean a better backpack. A backpack that’s too big can tempt you to pack more than you need. So, first of all, choose a capacity that suits your activity and the amount of luggage you’re taking.
  3. Which features do you need? Next, think about which features matter to you while you’re out and about. Want quick access to your water bottle? In that case, side pockets are handy. Taking a laptop? Look for a model with a separate laptop compartment. Hikers may find attachment points for walking poles or other equipment useful.
Some backpacks are deliberately simple, while others have lots of useful pockets, zips, loops and attachment points. Focus on what you’ll actually use.
  4. Does the backpack fit your body? Even a backpack of the right size can feel uncomfortable if the fit isn’t right. Getting the fit right is especially important if you’ll be carrying the backpack for a long time or with a heavy load.

Pay attention to the length of the back panel, the shoulder straps and the hip belt. On larger touring or trekking backpacks, a properly adjusted carrying system also helps distribute the weight more comfortably.

A well-fitting backpack is more comfortable to carry

The longer you’re out and about, the more important carrying comfort becomes. A small backpack with a light load needs a less substantial carrying system than a fully loaded trekking backpack. That’s why back length, shoulder straps, the hip belt and weight distribution play an important role with larger models.

Not sure about the fit? Try the backpack on with some weight inside. That way, you can get a better feel for whether the shoulder straps fit properly and the hip belt sits in the right place.

How do you pack a backpack?

Choosing the right backpack is one thing. Packing it properly is just as important when you’re on the move. Ideally, pack heavy items at the bottom and close to your back to keep the load stable. Keep things you need often, such as a raincoat, water bottle or snacks, somewhere you can reach them quickly.

For a multi-day trip, packing logically is especially important. It means you won’t have to empty your entire backpack every time you need something.

Backpacks for women, men and children

A backpack should not only suit your activity but also your body. That’s why A.S.Adventure has models for women, men and children.

For children, a lightweight backpack that fits well is important. A school backpack also needs enough room for everything they take to school, without being unnecessarily big or heavy. For adults, there are different fits for men and women and different carrying systems, from compact everyday backpacks to large trekking backpacks.
