La Isla Bonita

The most north-western island of the Canary Islands, La Palma is the third smallest of the seven official islas that make up the Spanish archipelago. And it’s also the most surprising. With its abundance of dense pine forests, natural parks, dizzying craters, black beaches, imposing volcanoes, pastel-coloured villages, and more than 1,000 kilometres of hiking trails, the ‘Beautiful Island’ came by its nickname naturally. Moreover, La Palma is one of the least tourism-exploited islands of the Canarias, a place where slow living is allowed. The capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma, also proves this with its sleepy charm.

Like the other Canary Islands, La Palma is a volcanic island, which means it has a very distinct geography with major differences in level, making it the perfect location for outdoor sports such as hiking, paragliding, and mountain biking. For example, the landscape dives from the Roque de los Muchachos at an altitude of 2,423 metres to the deepest point on the island, some four kilometres below sea level. With the Roque, La Palma also has the second highest mountain in the Canary Islands, meaning you won’t get any closer to the island’s world-famous starry sky than this.
