Would you like to know more about how this imposing steel suspension bridge over the Tagus got its name? On 25 April 1974, a non-violent military coup took place in Portugal to put an end to the authoritarian regime of Marcello Caetano - the so-called Carnation Revolution. On that day, many Lisbon citizens came to the streets to support the revolution. While crossing the bridge, which was called Ponte Salazar at the time, they removed the nameplate and painted a new name: Ponte 25 de Abril.
Fun fact: the Ponte 25 de Abril (almost 2.5 km long and 70 m high) was designed by the same bridge builders as the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, the lesser known brother of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Tip: you can admire the majestic Christo Rei from the bridge; this statue is on the south bank of the Tagus and was inspired by the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. You can then continue along the Tagus promenade to the Torre de Belém.
