Location: Lisbon – Portugal
Reason why: authentic charm in a colourful setting for a modest budget.

Mood: spending the whole day tearing through the steep streets, across sunbathed squares, and on the legendary tram 28 in your awesome outdoor play clothes.

Welcome to Lisbon!

The brightly coloured houses, ceramic tiles, and summer temperatures immediately give you that Mediterranean holiday feeling that you’ve been looking forward to for so long. Put on your good hiking boots because in order to discover the trendy neighbourhoods, known as bairros, you’ll have to conquer many a steep hill. As a reward for all your effort, you’ll have a priceless view out over the city.

5x Lisbon with the kids

  1. Let a local give you a bicycle tour and discover the hidden gems without having too steep a climb.
  2. Get up early and taste the famous Pastéis de Belém – traditional, handmade pastries – in the Rua de Belém.
  3. Become acquainted with the fascinating world of seas and oceans in Oceanário de Lisboa, a giant indoor aquarium full of great exhibits.
  4. Take the train towards Cascais and get off there for a day full of unadulterated beach fun at Praia de Carcavelos or Praia de São Pedro do Estoril.
  5. Wander off the beaten track in the green jungle of the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, ‘where the land ends and the sea begins’.
